In the previous quarter, I worked as a TA for PSYC137: Social Cognition (taught by Dr. Piotr Winkielman), where I also had the chance to give a guest lecture to about 200 undergrad students.
In the lecture, I introduced the ongoing debates in psychology around mixed emotions (which was my master’s research topic) and shared some critical perspectives on why mixed emotions haven’t been widely studied as a distinct affective experience in experimental psychology so far. Since the course mainly focused on the valence-arousal circumplex model of emotion, I used the lecture to highlight where this model falls short in explaining mixed emotions, and to offer a more nuanced way of thinking about the topic.
Overall, it was a great opportunity not just to engage with my research, but also to practice communicating scientific ideas clearly and concisely in a non-native language.
